Costa Rica is home to a variety of marine life, which draws many divers. Some of the species you can expect to see in Costa Rica waters include humpback whales, dolphins, orcas, turtles, hammerhead sharks, bull sharks, and manta rays. Costa Rica is the perfect place to be a seasoned diver. There are many diving spots in Costa Rica that you can enjoy, regardless of your level.

Cano Island

The waters around Cano Island are turquoise, providing the perfect setting for snorkeling and scuba diving. This area is home to the largest concentration of coral-building organisms (including brain and head corals). These waters are home to manta and humpback rays, as well other large marine creatures. Prices for accommodations and tours will drop during the rainy season and there will be fewer people.


Islas Murcielagos

One of Costa Rica's most famous dive sites, Islas Murcielagos can be found in the Santa Elena Peninsula at the northern tip. These islands offer excellent visibility and are surrounded by ocean. In this area, you can expect to find many species fish and rays. You can also spot bull sharks or olive ridley turtles in this area.

Catalina Island

Catalina Island is the ideal place for those who want to have an unforgettable diving experience. These uninhabited island are only two to 15 minutes from Costa Rica's northwest coastline. The visibility and temperature of this area is comparable to those found elsewhere on the Pacific Coast. However there are some variations in the water. If you'd like to dive in a warm, temperate environment with lots of marine life, then Catalina Island is for you.

Puerto Viejo

The transportation situation is an important consideration when planning your Puerto Viejo vacation. Because Puerto Viejo does not have official parking lots, most locals park along the roadside. If you're driving, leave your vehicle at your accommodation and walk or cycle through the center of town. You can also call a taxi at any establishment or take an official red taxi around the town.
