Become a Cavern Diver

athens scuba park

If you are considering becoming a cavern diver, you will need to complete a scuba diving course. This course covers four scuba diving dives. The first one is an outdoor practice dive where you will learn basic techniques for handling line and reel, air management, and avoiding silt outs. Your instructor will also show you how to plan your dive and keep your orientation and air management under control. Upon completion of the course, you will be able to dive in caves or other caves with safety rules.

Safety

Cave diving safety protocols follow the Rule of Threes. The cave diver should have three different sources of light and a minimum of two separate tanks, either independently or manifold mounted. The gas should be divided into three different sections so that they can survive the dive. If the dive team has experience in diving in caves, a more conservative gas management plan will be preferred. Cave divers should be careful when diving in caves.

Equipment

Cave diving requires specialized equipment. It is essential to have two types of safety gear. One should be used as a guideline reel, and the other should be used during the dive. Make sure each diver has a safety line with enough line to reach the cave entrance. Manufacturers will often pack the reels up to the edge with guideline when making a new reel. This makes them more susceptible to jamming. To prevent a jam, trim approximately 10 meters (30 ft.) of line before you use the reel. This will reduce the risk for entanglement.

Maximum penetration

TDI offers a cavern diver course that is designed for scuba divers who wish to dive in areas where direct vertical access is not possible. This includes caverns or overhangs. Although it is not necessary to take a cavern diving course, this course will give you the skills and knowledge to make the most of this environment. You will learn how safe to navigate narrow spaces that are often hidden from public view.
