Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers are coming together from the Tacoma dive community to support the environment this Earth Day. The cleanup takes place at the Point Defiance Boathouse in Tacoma. 810 lbs of trash was removed from the area's waterways during last year's cleanup. This effort is ongoing to preserve marine life and the environment. You can promote your business by getting involved and meet others who enjoy scuba diving.

Organisers have planned to have kayakers and scuba diver teams work together to take away fishing gear from Tacoma's waterfront. Divers will lift the net out of the water using a boat elevator once it is removed. Wounded Warriors will allow some participants to take large pieces of trash or other waste off the water. Organizers are hoping the cleanup will help preserve our waters and provide a unique experience for the community.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers have the opportunity to help save endangered rockfish species through participation in a community-based survey at Tacoma SCUBA. This dive is part in the Harbor WildWatch citizen-science collaboration with the NOAA. Survey participation is open to all divers. The training is done during the dive brief. The participant must be certified to take part in night diving.

In 1998, WDFW launched a multiyear mark recapture study in Westport, Washington. The study includes a tag-recovery monitoring system for sport fishing that allows five annual releases of black rocksfish. These fish were released onto pinnacles in the Westport charter-fishing fleet area. To determine the individual identity of each fish, two wire tags were attached to the opercular musculature.

With just a few pounds of trash, you can easily get out.

If you're looking for a place to go scuba diving in the greater Tacoma area, consider the waters near Commencement Bay. Earth Day was celebrated by 47 pounds of trash collected by volunteer scuba divers. Octopuses and fishing line were also included in the trash. The clean-up was organized by the Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST), part of Highline Community College. The previous MaST cleanup had removed hundreds of tons of trash from the waters surrounding Des Moines.

Observation of the wounded bull sea lion

Tacoma, Washington divers had the chance to witness an extraordinary sight while scubadiving. Divers were shocked to see a bull sealion being wounded by an archer. The injured animal was reportedly blind and had a scar from a shark bite. Afterwards, Bjorn was transported to the Marine Mammal Care Center in Los Angeles where rescuers helped him gain weight. Bjorn is now the name of the sea-lion after a character from the TV series "Vikings." This mighty animal, which is nearly 400 lbs in weight, now resides at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

padi certifications

A Tacoma scuba diving group was fortunate to witness this dramatic sight in October. The group was astonished to see a sea lion in action for the first time. Observations of the sea lions reveal their playful nature. Sea lion pups tend to gather in groups of similar age, and will play with divers in the water. The pups like to play with divers as well, jumping into the sea to give them toys or interact with bubble streams.
